How Nokia is using Artificial Intelligence and Drones

Welcome to the topic “How Nokia is using Artificial Intelligence and Drones in the 5G Network Deployments.”

The world is moving fast and the digital transformation and automation is around the corner. Nokia does not hang back in this scenario and has already started using artificial intelligence and drones in 5G networks’ deployments.

In the past, the networks we used to have were 3G and 4G only. The telecommunication companies used to deploy, manage and operate these networks by the traditional and manual methods.

As a result, the processes were full of inaccuracies and errors that humans led. Those deployments processes passed through many hands to get authentic and final results. In order to be reliable and genuine, they needed repeated checks.

So, what was included in the traditional methods? The manual techniques encompassed the use of spreadsheets that were created by hand. Which is why there had always been such a high probability of error.

As times have changed now and we are living with the following advanced generation called 5G networks. With the latest technologies, the methods to deploy the networks have also been evolved.

Nokia, a giant in telecommunications, is heading towards the deployments of the latest 5G network, not through the classical methods but the modern ones. With this hope, Nokia is about to bring change in the true sense of the world.

The Finnish company claims to digitize the deployments of 5G networks worldwide. The good news is, all the procedures that are used in the deployments globally will also be applied in Nokia networks around the globe.

Nokia and Modern Methods in 5G Deployment

Nokia has closely observed the limitations of using traditional methods in 5G deployment.

The president of Nokia global services, Sanjay Goel, expresses his reservations regarding the ancient classical processes that are challenging for the operators. He is of the view that the managers and the operators go through difficulties in anticipating, building, designing, and managing the latest generation 5G networks.

That is why the president of global services of Nokia believes that the transformation from traditional methods to digitization, artificial intelligence, and automation is essential in order to seize the total capacity and potential of 5G networks.

Nokia authorities and officials are hoping that with the adoption of drones, augmented reality, and AI of the assets, the Communication Service Providers, can successfully go through the transformation journey towards digitalization.

Nokia believes these steps inevitable to fully utilize the potential of 5G networks and to bring more sophistication in the deployment procedures.

Significance and Demands of 5G Deployment

As compared to 3G and 4G networks, the 5G network is going to offer a lot more. The use cases are going to increase drastically with the 5G network.

As we know, the faster network has the potential to bring a lot of new applications. Use cases that were simply not possible with the previous network technologies.

With the latest and speedy 5G network, the businesses will gain new heights, edge computing will prosper, and an increase is expected in industrial automation with a 5G network. In addition, the gaming industry will boom, and there might develop terrific apps utilizing augmented reality.

Besides this, telecommunication companies are expecting a rise in the data flow that comes with the deployment of 5G networks. Their expectations and anticipations regarding the increase in dataflow demand reliable networks more than ever now.

According to one estimate, the data flow can get an increase from 2019’s 35 exabytes to 2022’s 73 exabytes. This expanded and engaged ecosystem requires well-grounded networks.

These observations lead telecommunication providers to discover the fact that the classical method such as spreadsheets won’t cope with this situation.

So, presently, there’s a dire need to adopt AR, Drones, and AI in order to pursue digital transformation.

Significance and Demands

How will Digitalization of Assets be Helpful in 5G Deployment?

In one of his blogs, Goel, the president of global services of Nokia stated openly that the conventional methods do have their own limitations.

Moreover, according to experts, there may come a lot of challenges while supervising the complicated 5G infrastructure with present inefficiencies. The network management with these flaws can be problematic regarding 5G network deployment.

In the light of these expectations and observations, Nokia decided to adopt automation and digitize designing, managing, and deploying processes of the 5G network of the company globally.

Nokia is expanding on digital tools. Modern technology is being utilized from the very beginning. Now, the company has already initiated the surveys of the sites with drones. It helps to photograph future sites with high resolution and detailed three-dimensional mapping.

The drone-led surveys of the assets and sites lead work teams to informed decisions. The Artificial Intelligence tools can detect the anomalies of the network within the right span of time.

Moreover, these surveys are highly beneficial for engineers. The images and models of future sites provide data of the place and help engineers define the necessary steps taken for the build.

The purpose of these surveys is to minimize the chances of error and design the sight right from the beginning. It does not demand engineers to physically visit the site every now and then in order to begin the deployment. In other words, it reduces the manual efforts to a great extent.

The augmented reality tools and drones are utilized to inspect the site throughout its life cycle. Through drone technology, you can keep a check on the sites with the help of a single person who connects to a remote expert with AR video collaboration tools.

This process does not save time solely but is cost-efficient as well.

5G Deployment Workflow

If we analyze further, the digital database for the site is continually updated. As new data is gathered, it is added to the database, continually upgrading the site’s data model.

The real-time dashboards possess visual records as well as statistical data. The authorities, officials, and experts can access these records and data remotely. In this way, they oversee key performance indicators and ongoing work information.

The good news is that all the database and workflow information is gathered at one platform called the Nokia Delivery Platform. This information is generated by several parties working on the site and integrated into a single platform.

NDP covers all the aspects of a network’s deployment, being a management application that is cloud-based. But what is NDP responsible for? It is the entire network’s life cycle that NDP covers. It includes a plan, design, validation processes, tests, building, integration, and commissioning.

Does NDP reap benefits for engineers and managers of the company? The integration of workflows at one platform can bring real fruits for the teams working on network deployment sites.

The Finnish company’s expectations with modern methods and technology have started reaping the advantages. Now the better results that they come up with prove the value of  their forward-looking commitment to digital transformation.

Nokia officials have announced the successful beginning of their digital transformation. At Nokia Global Services, Carlijn Adema, who is marketing head of Nokia Company, claims that they have over one hundred customers globally. Moreover, they provide a full-fledged presentation of their projects digitally. The ancient methods of network rollouts have been replaced by automation and digitization.

The head of marketing further claims that the quality of installation is also enhanced by 30%. The deployment services of Nokia have strengthened both the 4G and 5G networks, which means it is delivering up to 30% faster network speed compared to the market. Besides that, site visiting requirements are also reduced by a third.

5G Deployment Workflow

Wrapping up

The digital transformation is close at hand. The 5G networks are about to bring the digital revolution worldwide. However, the communication service providers have to revise their procedures in order to realize a full and complete transformation.

Nokia hopes to put an end to the classical ways of performing network rollouts. The new procedures leading towards digital transformation are being practiced formally now. It is going to take the world to new heights. Automation and digitalization are soon going to completely replace the old-fashioned methods.

The use of artificial intelligence, drones, and augmented reality tools now play a significant role in the deployment of 5G networks. The digital revolution may just be a dream without the use of modern telco methods.

In conclusion, traditional methods are simply not going to be effective anymore, given the increase in data rates and complexity that comes with 5G. Thus, digital transformation is inevitable for the telecommunication service providers, and the sooner, the better.
